Ἀβραάμ (Rec. t Ἁβραάμ; cf. Tdf. Proleg., p. 106) (Josephus, Ἄβραμος, ), אַבְרָהָם (father of a multitude, cf. Genesis 17:5), Abraham, the renowned founder of the Jewish nation: Matthew 1:1; Matthew 22:32; Luke 19:9; John 8:33; Acts 3:25; Hebrews 7:1ff, and elsewhere. He is extolled by the apostle Paul as a pattern of faith, Romans 4:1ff; Romans 4:17ff; Galatians 3:6 (cf. Hebrews 11:8), on which account all believers in Christ have a claim to the title sons or posterity of Abraham, Galatians 3:7, 29; cf. Romans 4:11.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For a Græcised form Ἄβραμος, cf. BGU II. 585ii. 3 (after A.D. 212) Πααβῶς Ἀβράμου. The non-Græcized form is common in Fayûm documents of the Christian period, e.g. BGU I. 103.11 (vi/vii A.D.) Ἀβραάμ; see further Deissmann BS, p. 187. A Jew Ἀβράμ [ιος ? is named in BGU II. 715ii. 2 (Fayûm—A.D. 101–2).
