OGIS 479.11 (ii/A.D. init.) P Ryl II. 77.34 (A.D. 192) μιμοῦ τὸν πα ̣[τ ]ε ̣ρα τὸν φιλότιμον τὸν [γ ]έρ ̣ον ̣τ ̣α φῶτα , ";imitate your father the lover of office, the brave old man"; : note that γέρων here plays the part of adj. to the poetical word φώς —see the editors’ note. CP Herm 100.7 (fragment). The word is not very often met with, but its continued existence in the vernacular is attested by the MGr γέροντας (also γέρος ), as well as derivatives like γερνῶ (aor. ἐγέρασα ) which show mixture with the kindred γῆρας .
