A town in Judah allotted with its suburbs to the priests (Joshua 15:50, 21:14; 1 Chronicles 6:57). David frequented this place during his wanderings (1 Samuel 30:28). It is known now under the name of "Al-Samu'a," a village seven miles south of Hebron (Robinson, "Biblical Researches in Palestine," 2:626). In 1 Chronicles 4:17 "Eshtemoa" may be taken either for a person or for a city, but in verse 19 "Eshtemoa" certainly represents a person.
