Italian statesman and author; born in Milan Jan. 3, 1815; died at Lesa, Novara, Oct. 4, 1888. He was one of the best friends of the Jews in Italy and a thorough enemy of anti-Semitism, whose adherents he regarded as "madmen." On various occasions he gave expression to his feelings of sympathy with the Jews; and in his work "Gli Ebri Come Patrioti" he praises them for the great services they have rendered in the emancipation and progress of Italy.
