Eminent geographer of the fourth century; intimate friend of the Roman emperor, Julian the Apostate. Alypius, of noble and generous character, was governor of Britain 355-360, whence he was recalled by the emperor to superintend the reconstruction of the Temple at Jerusalem. At first he showed much zeal in the accomplishment of his task, but, by degrees, seeing the little effort made by the Jews to aid him, he lost interest and left the field clear for the intrigues of the enemies of the Jews, who sought by every means to cause his failure in carrying out the generous purposes of the emperor.
