El´dad and Me´dad, two of the seventy elders appointed by Moses to assist him in the government of the people. Although not present with the others at the door of the tabernacle, they were equally filled with the divine spirit, and began to 'prophesy' in the camp. Joshua, thinking this irregular, requested Moses to forbid them, and received an answer eminently characteristic of the great lawgiver: 'Enviest thou for my sake? Would to God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put His spirit upon them' ().
