a light open texture, usually made of cotton or flax. It is used in bookbinding, upholstery and other industries. It is also used as a backing to strengthen paper, as in maps and packing paper. Sometimes jute scrims are made for the latter purpose, and the whole made impervious to moisture by the addition of some waterproof solution. Certain varieties of jute scrims or nets are used for supporting the branches of fruit trees, and for preventing birds from damaging the fruit.
