The surrounding country is very fertile, producing sugar-cane, Indian corn, cacao, tobacco and indigo. The cultivation of coffee was begun here on a large scale about the middle of the 19th century and was increased gradually until1889-1890when an insect pest destroyed the trees. The language of Lipa is Tagalog.
