1911 Encyclopedia Britannica
Of North America, a religious momination, founded about the beginning of the igth century ~r Jacob Albright (1759-1808), a German Lutheran of Pennsylinia. About 1790 he began an itinerant mission among his 110w-countrymen, chiefly in Pennsylvania; and meeting with nasiderable success, he was, at an assembly composed of ad~rents from the different places he had visited, elected in 1800 residing elder or chief pastor, and shortly afterwards rules of)vernment were adopted somewhat- similar to those of the ro bodies are also in close agreement. In 1807 Albright was)pointed bishop of the community, which adopted its present tme in I8i8. In 1816 the first annual conference was held, id in 1843 there was instituted a general conference, composed delegates chosen by the annual conferences and constituting ie highest legislative and judicial authority in the church. he members of the general conference hold office for four years. 1 1891 a long internal controversy resulted in a division. A w-suit awarded the property to the branch making its headsarters at Indianapolis, whereon the other party, numbering ,ooo, that met at Philadelphia, constituted themselves the nited Evangelical Church. The Association in 1906 had)out 1o5,00o members, besides some io,ooo in Germany and witzerland, and has nearly 2000 churches and i 200 itinerant ad other preachers. There are four bishops. It distributes uch evangelical literature, and supports a mission in Japan.
