Jurist, born Newbern, North Carolina, 1778; died Raleigh, North Carolina, 1844. After serving as state senator and Federalist congressman, he was elected judge of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. In 1835 he was mainly responsible for the repeal of the constitutional provision which practically disenfranchised Catholics in his native state.
