Botanist, born Pressburg, Hungary, 1804; died Vienna, Austria, 1849. He studied theology but did not enter the priesthood. His botanical system is best explained in his most important work, "Genera plantarum secundum ordines naturales disposita" (1836-1850). He founded the first periodical in Austria for natural sciences. Besides publishing a number of writings on botanical subjects and two works dealing with the Chinese language and geography, he collaborated with other botanists.
