Founder of Notre Dame, Indiana. Born on February 6, 1814 at Ahuille, France; died on October 31, 1893 at Notre Dame, Indiana. Shortly after his ordination he was selected to establish the Congregation of the Holy Cross in the United States In 1841 he began the foundation of Notre Dame, at first a missionary station, later a prosperous educational institution. He also established the Sisters of the Holy Cross in the United States, and founded the publication Ave Maria in 1865. He was superior-general of his order from 1868 to his death.
