Founded in Paris, France in 1856 by Blessed Eugenie Smet to assist the Holy Souls, to visit and care for the sick poor, and for other charitable works. The Rule of Saint Ignatius is followed. Shortly after their institution, the Helpers created "honorary members," "associates," and "benefactors," who join them in prayer and sacrifice and enjoy the privileges of the Society. Priests become honorary members by celebrating a monthly Mass for the intentions of the community; and religious, by receiving a monthly Communion for these intentions. The Society has convents, including schools, orphanages, and settlement houses, in the United States, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Italy, and China. The mother-house is at Paris.
