A sacred vessel, if it contains the Blessed Sacrament, must not be touched by anyone except a priest or a deacon, unless in grave necessity. If the vessel be empty it may be handled by clerics not in Sacred Orders, or by those who have obtained permission, such as repairers of such articles. All others who may handle an empty sacred vessel should use a cloth, to prevent direct contact.
