A Slavic people in western Russia, Poland, Hungary, and the United States. Their name dates from the time of Charlemagne, and they claim to be the original Russians. The majority of them are now Uniats who, having become estranged from Rome during the Eastern Schism, were reunited in 1595 under Pope Clement VIII. They use the Ruthenian Rite.
