Priest, scholar and writer. Born on May 14, 1812 in Killough, County Down, Ireland; died February 26, 1880 in Dublin, Ireland. Ordained on June 13, 1835. Professor of ecclesiastical history at Maynooth, where he became president in 1857. He was appointed a member of the Historical Manuscript Commission in 1869, and acted as joint editor of the Report on the Carte Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library. A contributor to the Dublin Review, he also wrote articles for Chambers's Encyclopedia and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and translated Leibnitz's System of Theology. He exercised great influence on prominent men of his age, among them Newman and Wiseman.
