Catholic periodical published monthly in England during the latter half of the 19th century as a medium for discussions on Church matters concerning which many Englishmen were misinformed. Technical theology was avoided, but difficulties arose when the articles supported a liberal political policy which Church authorities considered compromising. In 1862 pressure from this quarter, as well as financial difficulties, caused it to cease. It appeared later as a quarterly, under the title The Home and Foreign Review, but ceased publication in 1864. Cardinal Newman was an editor for a short time in 1859 in an attempt to change the tone of the paper, but was unsuccessful.
