Saint John and Saint Paul picture the conflict between good and evil under the contrast of light and darkness (John 3; Ephesians 5). Hell is the place of "exterior darkness" (Matthew 22). Therefore Satan is called the "prince of darkness," and his influence and rule Saint Paul speaks of as the "power of darkness" (Colossians 1; Luke 22).
