(Latin: primus, first)
The first of the day hours of the Divine Office, so called because it was recited at the first hour after sunrise, or about 6 A.M. It is a monastic institution of the 4th century which gradually became of universal observance. It comprises hymn, three psalms, little chapter, respond, martyrology, brief lessons, and prayers invoking God's help for the day. Occasionally the Athanasian Creed and ferial prayers are added.
