Term applied to Catholic associations active in various parts of Europe. Among the most famous are those of:
- Germany; which was formed at Mainz in 1848 by Catholic societies throughout the country in order to defend the religious freedom and civilrights of German Catholics
- Switzerland; formed in 1855 in order to centralize Catholic associational life
- Austria; formed at the Fifth Catholic Congress at Vienna in 1905 in order to encourage the efforts of the Catholic press against Liberalism
The two former were named in honor of Pope Pius IX, the last in honor of Pope Pius X.
