(Latin: pasco, feed)
Name of a popular movement in France in the middle of the 13th century, animated by a desire to free the Holy Land from the Turks. The unauthorized person who preached the crusade to the shepherds and laborers was known as the "Master of Hungary." The army of over 30,000 which collected grew unruly, harassed the clergy, desecrated churches, attacked Jews, and committed other acts of violence. The Pastoureaux were excommunicated and only suppressed with drastic measures. A second movement with the same name and purpose arose in northern France, 1320, and was in turn put down only after much blood-shed.
