Confessor, Archbishop of Magdeburg, founder of the Premonstratensians; born Xanten, Germany, c.1080;died Magdeburg, 1134. He served as almoner to Emperor Henry V for a time; but decided to embrace the religious life. He joined the Benedictines of Siegburg, received Holy Orders, and founded a monastery at Premontre, near Laon. Having given his property to the poor he traveled about France and Netherlands, preaching and combating heresy. As Archbishop of Magdeburg he enforced many valuable reforms. Canonized, 1582.
