Born June 24, 1663 at Hyères; died September 28, 1742 at Clermont, France. Celebrated preacher and bishop. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory at the age of 18, and after his ordination began his career as a preacher which was to give him rank with Bossuet and Bourdaloue. In 1717 he was appointed to the see of Clermont, one of the largest in France. As bishop he maintained ecclesiastical discipline, was a tender father to his clergy and devoted to his flock. His works have been frequently reprinted.
