Ecclesiastic and author, born Hereford, England, c.1140;died 1208. He was educated at the University of Paris, was at the English court, 1162, represented the king at the Third Lateran Council, 1179, and in 1197 became Archdeacon of Oxford. He wrote "De Nugis Curialium" (Courtier's Triflings) and probably the French poem on which is based the earliest prose "Lancelot."
