Founder of comparative physiology. Born Crevalcore, Italy, March 10, 1628; died Rome, Italy, November 29, 1694. Founded comparative anatomy. First to see capillary circulation. Drew up a plan of the structure of the secreting glands. Discovered the mucous nature of the lower layer of the epidermis, of the splenic foIIicular bodies, and of the vascular coils in the kidneys cortex. Made valuable studies in vegetable histology. Taught at Pisa, Messina, Bologna, and in the papal medical school, Rome.
