Francis Jaccard, Blessed

Martyr, born Onnion, France, 1799; died Tonkin, Indo-China, 1838. He began his studies at the seminary at Melan, from there went to Chambery, 1819, and finally joined the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris. Assigned to the Cochin-China missions, he set out in 1824, and arrived at Macao the following year. From here he journeyed to Tonkin where he undertook his apostolic labors. Summoned to the court of Min-Menh to translate the manuscript of a French philosopher, his proficiency caused the king to order Father Jaccard to settle in the neighborhood of the court for future service. Shortly afterward he was brought to trial, accused of preaching the Christian religion and of leading a band of Christians to usurp the property of their heathen brethren. Sentenced to death, he was pardoned because of his skill as translator, but was again seized, tortured, and strangled to death, September 21, 1838. His body was buried near Tonkin by some Christians, but was later removed to the Seminary for Foreign Missions, Paris. Beatified, 1900.
