Monastery formerly occupying a small island of the Inner Hebrides, west of Scotland; founded in 563, by Saint Columba. It soon became one of the most important centers of Celtic Christianity and culture; it is thought that the Book of Kells was written there. Iona was the mother-house of many monasteries in Britain and Ireland. Early in the 13th century the old Celtic monastery was replaced by Benedictine monasteries for men and for women; these were confiscated, 1561, by order of the Convention of Estates. The existing runs date from the 13th century and earlier, and are now the property of the Dukes of Argyll. Notable abbots include
- Saint Adamnan
- Saint Baithen of Iona
- Saint Columba
- Saint Failbhe of Iona
