A term formerly used in referring to the non-residential or titular sees (situated in the lands of the unbelievers) to which Latin honorary, auxiliary, or coadjutor bishops are appointed. Some of these sees were in Greece, and in 1886 the Lutheran King George having represented to Leo XIII that the term gave offense to Greek Orthodox Christians, the pope at once decreed that it be abolished.
