Kingdom of northeastern Europe; area, 39,783 square miles. It is united to Denmark through the identity of the ruler. It was evangelized by Irish monks early in the 10th century, became Lutheran in the 16th century, and received Catholicism again c.1850,though Catholics constitute only a small minority of the inhabitants. It constitutes a prefecture Apostolic, established on June 12, 1923. It was elevated to a Vicariate Apostolic on June 6, 1929, and the diocese of Reykjavik was established on October 18, 1968.
