Physicist. Born 1629; died 1695. Discovered polarization. Developed the wave theory of light. Explained the laws of reflection and refration later confirlned by Foucault's experiments, and prepared the way for Newton by his statement of the laws which, in circular motion, govern the magnitude of centrifugal force.
