Queen, widow, born Pressburg, Hungary, 1271; died Marburg, Hesse, 1336. She was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, and at the age of four was betrothed to Hermann, eldest son of Hermann I, Landgrave of Thuringia, and was sent to the Thuringian court to be educated. In 1221 she was married to the second son, Louis, the eldest having died in 1216. In spite of her position at court, Elizabeth led an austerely simple life, practised penance, and devoted herself to works of charity. Louis proved a worthy husband and encouraged her in her exemplary life; they had three children. Instructed by Brother Rodeger of the Order of Saint Francis and later by Master Conrad of Marburg, Elizabeth increased her spiritual practises. After the death of her husband, 1227, she was driven from court by her brother-in-law, Henry Raspe, according to the older records; more recent accounts, however, state that she left voluntarily. In 1228, she renounced the world and became a tertiary of Saint Francis, and in the same year built the Franciscan hospital at Marburg and devoted herself to the care of the sick. Many miracles occurred at her grave. Patroness of the Teutonic Knights and the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis. Emblems: alms, flowers, bread, the poor, a pitcher. Relics in Church of Saint Elizabeth, Marburg, and in the convent of Saint Clare, Vienna. Feast, Roman Calendar, November 19,.
