Philanthropist, born Cavan, Ireland, c.1814;died New Orleans, Louisiana, 1882. She was brought to Baltimore by her father, Charles Gaffney, but at an early age was left a homeless orphan. After her husband's death at New Orleans, 1836, she consecrated her life to succoring the orphans and the poor, and died mourned as "the mother of the orphans." Two years later her statue was unveiled in a small park called after her in New Orleans.
