Painter, born probably Mainz, Germany, c.1430;died Bruges, Belgium, 1494. He is thought to have studied in Cologne, and later to have been a pupil of Roger van der Weyden. His work unites Flemish skill and German piety. Tenderness, delicacy, lovely landscapes, and charming detail are his characteristics. The Hospital of Saint John in Bruges has his "Adoration of the Magi," "The Marriage of Saint Catherine," and the fourteen scenes of the "Shrine of Saint Ursula." "Christ the Light of the World," with its naive pageantry, is in the Munich Gallery. His Madonnas are in the Louvre, the Uffizi, and the National Gallery. His excellent "Portrait of William Moreel" is in the Brussels Museum.
