Chronicler and Bishop of Saint Asaph, born Monmouth, Wales (now England), c.1100;died Llandaff, 1154. As archdeacon of Saint Teilo's he opened schools where clerics and chieftains were educated. He was elected bishop, c.1151,but died before entering his diocese. His history of British kings has influenced English literature, especially national romance, from Layamon to Tennyson. He also composed a Latin version of the Cymric "Prophecies of Merlin."
