Mentioned in Leviticus 11, as an unclean animal, whereas the bearded vulture, the largest bird of prey, is probably intended. The opinion that the Bible here speaks of the fabulous griffon, the monstrous progeny of a lion and an eagle, is based on a misinterpretation of the Hebrew word peres, from which it is translated.
