Born in 393; died in 450. Queen of Rome; daughter of Theodosius the Great. In the sack of Rome by the Goths she was taken a hostage by Alaric and afterwards married Ataulf, King of the Goths. After his death she became the wife of Constantius and the mother of Valentinian III, for whom she acted as regent. Her zeal in building and beautifying churches gave a new stimulus to Christian art in the 5th century.
