Statesman and diplomat; born Newcastle, Maine, 1795; died there, 1844; prominent in the Maine Legislature from 1826 to 1831 when he was elected to Congress. As charge d'affaires at Lisbon (1835-1841) he negotiated a favorable commercial and navigation treaty with Portugal. He was a member of the commission which negotiated preliminaries of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, and governor of Maine for nine months after the resignation of Fairfield.
