The state of those condemned to Hell, i.e.,demons, and men who die in the state of mortal sin. Damnation, because it is the result of a sentence pronounced on the guilty subject. Eternal, because the sentence of God is irrevocable, for it is specifically pronounced to be eternal in its consequences (Matthew 25), and the condemned are no longer in a state of probation, which with man comes to an end at death, but are in a fixed state which admits of no change (Luke 16).
