Small vessel for containing the wine and water necessary for the celebration of Mass; two are always employed. The Roman Missal directs that they be made of glass but other materials, such as gold and silver, are sometimes used. In the early Church the wine for the Holy Sacrifice was brought by the faithful in a jar-shaped vessel and was poured by the deacon into the chalice. At the ordination of an acolyte, an empty cruet, symbolic of his duties, is presented to him by the bishop.
