Most famous school of the 6th century, founded by Saint Finnian at Cluain Eraird. The "Twelve Apostles of Erin" were instructed in Sacred Scripture at Clonard which at one time had more than 3,000 pupils, according to the Office of Saint Finnian. Its glory departed in 1206 when the See of Meath was transferred from Clonard to Trim.
