One of the three holy oils, the matter or essential substance of the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is olive oil in which a small quantity of balm or balsam has been mixed; this is a perfumed resin from the terebinth tree and other oriental and tropical plants. The word chrism signifies a scented ointment. Besides its use at Confirmation, it is also employed in the ceremonies of Baptism, in the consecration of a bishop and of a church, and in the blessing of chalices, patens, baptismal water, and church bells.
