(1786-1889)

Catholic chemist and physicist, born Angers, France; died Paris, France. Made valuable contributions to immediate analysis by his analysis and classification of animal fats which led to the manufacture of stearine candles, the commercial manufacture of glycerine, did research work on color harmony and dyes, and discovered butyric, capric, capraic, magaric, oleic, and stearic acids, and a great increase in the variety of dyes obtainable from benzol.
