(c.1524-1580) Poet and dramatist, born probably Lisbon. He was educated at the University of Coimbra. After a varied career spent mostly in exile, he returned to Lisbon, 1570, where he published his epic poem "The Lusiads," dedicating it to the king, for which he received a small pension. The central point of his work is the voyage and discovery of his kinsman, Vasco da Gama. He is the outstanding figure of Portuguese literature, a master of poetic style and diction and is remarkable for his lyrics, but less noteworthy for his dramas.
