Also written Calixtus II. Son of Count William of Burgundy. Reigned from 1119 to 1124. Born in Quingey, France as Gumo; died Rome, Italy. He was a Benedictine, Archbishop of Vienne, and cardinal. As pope he disciplined the French clergy, decreed against investiture, simony, and concubinage of the clergy. The question of investiture between him and Emporer Henry V was settled by the Concordat of Worms, 1122, and confirmed by the First Lateran Council, 1123. He regained a portion of the diminished Patrimony of Saint Peter, and beautified Rome.
