(925-965) Archbishop of Cologne, died Rheims. He was the youngest son of Emperor Henry I and Saint Mathilda. Educated at Utrecht and at the court of his brother Otto I, he was appointed archchancellor to Otto in 951. For his loyalty during the revolt of Otto's eldest son, Ludolf, and Conrad, Duke of Lorraine, the emperor caused him to be elected Archbishop of Cologne and entrusted to him the administration of the Duchy of Lorraine. Through his mediation the disturbances were quelled. A great bishop and zealous pastor, he ruled by personal piety and holiness of life. He lavished his resources on monastic and ecclesiastical institutions. He founded the monastery of Saint Pantaleon at Cologne, where he is buried. Feast, October 11,.
