Bruno, Saint 1030-1101

(c.1030-1101) Confessor and abbot, founder of the Carthusian Order, born Cologne, Germany; died Torre, Calabria, Italy. Educated at Rheims, he was ordained, c1055 He presided over the cathedral school at Rheims, 1057-1075, and was made chancellor of the church of Rheims. He opposed Manasses, Archbishop of Rheims, because of his laxity and mismanagement. In 1084 he, withdrew to Chartreuse, and, with his little band of followers, founded the Carthusian Order. There he lived for some time in solitude and prayer until he was summoned to Rome, 1090, by Urban II, a former pupil. He resided in the papal palace, sat in the councils, and seconded the pope's efforts for the reform of the clergy. Retiring from public life, he and his companions built a hermitage at Torre, where, 1095, the monastery of Saint Stephen was built. Bruno combined in the religious life the eremetical and the cenobitic; his learning is apparent from his scriptural commentaries. Patron of those possessed.
