(Middle English: bede, prayer) Beads strung together according to the kind, order, and number of prayers in certain forms of devotion are in common use among Catholics as an expedient to ensure an accurate count of prayers occurring in more or less frequent repetition. The Rosary is the most common. Use of beads among Hindus, Buddhists, Mohammedans, etc., is frequent.
