Catholic physicist. Born Paris, France, 1819; died Nanteuil, France, 1896. He was associated with Foucault in the optical experiments leading to the downfall of the emission theory. First to determine experimentally the velocity of light. Conducted experiments to show that "ether" is carried along by moving bodies.
