A socialistic settlement of German Protestants founded in Buffalo, New York, 1843, by Christian Metz and Barbara Heinemann, and located at Amana, Iowa, since 1843. It is the only one of similar settlements which has thrived for any length of time, owing, as its members believe, to religious motives. In 1925 there were 7 churches and 1,534 members.
