Queen of Sweden. Born on December 8, 1626 in Sweden; died on April 19, 1689 in Rome, Italy. Daughter of Gustavus Adolphus II of Sweden. She was crowned in 1646 and for a time ruled with laudable zeal, but later gave herself up to amusement. She gradually became interested in Catholicism, resigned her throne (1654) in favor of her cousin Charles Gustavus, went abroad, and was publicly received into the Church at Innsbruck, November 1655. A month later she arrived at Rome, where she devoted herself to religious practises, and the study of art and literature, and although sometimes severe was noted for her charity to the poor. She is buried in Saint Peter's Cathedral.
